GRAY IRON
Gray iron is the most common foundry casting alloy. The characteristic gray color is due to flakes of graphite contained in the metal. Graphite makes the properties of gray iron excellent for machining, outstanding in wear resistance, and high-vibration damping.

DUCTILE IRON
Ductile (or nodular) iron is valued for its ductility, elasticity, and high strength properties that allow heavier loads. It is easily cast and machined and is as corrosion resistant as gray iron. Production of ductile iron requires more complex metallurgy, the use of special melting stock, and special quality control procedures.

AUSTEMPERED DUCTILE IRON
Ductile (or nodular) iron is valued for its enhanced elasticity and high strength properties that serve even heavier loads than plain ductile iron. It is easily cast and machined, and it is as corrosion resistant as gray iron. Production of austempered ductile iron requires more complex metallurgy testing, the use of special melting stock, and strict process controls and quality procedures.
